Routine Checkups and Cleaning
At Armadale Dental Group, one of our dental professionals will check your teeth, gums and overall oral health. X-rays might also need be taken to detect cavities between your teeth. The examination will include a check for plaque and tartar on your teeth. Plaque is a clear, sticky layer of bacteria. If it is not removed, it can harden and become tartar.
The checkup also includes a careful examination of your tongue, throat, face, head, and neck. This is to look for any signs of trouble - swelling, redness, or possible signs of cancer.
Brushing and flossing help clean the plaque from your teeth, but you can't remove tartar at home. During the cleaning, our dental professional will remove tartar. This is called scaling. After your teeth are scaled, they may be polished. In most cases, a gritty paste is used for this. It helps to remove any surface stains on your teeth. The final step is flossing. Your dental professional will use floss to make sure the areas between your teeth are clean.
Routine checkup and cleaning are recommended every 6 months.

Periodontal Assessment and Treatment
Periodontal disease, also known as gum disease, is a set of inflammatory conditions affecting the tissues surrounding the teeth. In its early stage, called gingivitis, the gums become swollen, red, and may also bleed.
Periodontal assessment allows us to determine the periodontal status of your gums by assessing loss of attachment (probing depths, recession), bleeding, bone loss, teeth mobility, bone level and gum appearance.
Treatment involves good oral hygiene and regular professional teeth cleaning. Recommended oral hygiene include daily brushing and flossing. In certain cases antibiotics or dental surgery may be recommended. If you believe you may have issues relating to your gums, an assessment with one of our practitioners here at Armadale Dental Group is highly recommended.

Mouthguards
Our mouthguards are custom made to fit your mouth and offers protection for your teeth, jaw joints, soft tissue and neck against injuries and may even help reduce concussion when playing sports such as football, boxing and hockey or participating in high impact activities.
Even if you play a sport or are involved in activities where your mouth or face may not always be in danger, it is still advised to wear a mouthguard. Injury without can cause serious damage which could have long lasting repercussions.
During your appointment, our dentist will take an impression of your teeth using a special material. A precise replica model is made of your teeth. A handmade custom mouthguard is then made for you in your chosen personal or team colour.

Wisdom Teeth Removal
When healthy and properly aligned, wisdom teeth can be a valuable asset to the mouth. However, more often than not, they become misaligned and need to be removed before they can crowd or damage adjacent teeth.
Wisdom teeth also can be impacted, which means they become enclosed within the soft tissue and/or the jawbone or only partially break through or erupt through the gum. Partial eruption of the wisdom teeth allows an opening for bacteria to enter around the tooth and cause an infection, which can cause pain, swelling, jaw stiffness, tooth decay and gum disease.
A wisdom tooth that is fully erupted through the gum can be extracted as easily as any other tooth. However, a wisdom tooth that is underneath the gums and embedded in the jawbone will require a more complex procedure.
In some cases, we may need to refer treatment to an oral surgeon.

Crowns
A crown covers your natural tooth completely, and is often used to add strength to a tooth which is weakened or damaged. Alternatively, crowns can be used to change the appearance of the tooth for aesthetic reasons.
Although some light tooth damage can be repaired using fillings, crowns are often a better option as they offer a better level of strength structurally, along with long term protection for the tooth.
When a cavity is deep, or when a tooth is already cracked, crowns are a much more suitable option for repair and restoration.
Armadale Dental Group offers a few different options with the types of crowns we can offer you.

Implants
Dental implants are the modern day alternative to replacing your missing teeth with dentures. They are titanium posts which are surgically placed into the jaw bone, just under the gum. The titanium implants fuse to the jaw bone and can provide a solid support for artificial teeth, which can be individual or to support a bridge or denture. They give you the ability to eat, floss and function as you normally would have with natural teeth.
Your jaw needs to be finished growing, and your gums must be healthy. That's why dental implants are a fantastic solution for adults, not children.
You might also be a perfect candidate for implants if you're tired of having dentures that won't stay in place, or if you're ready to replace a bridge or partial dentures. Men or women in search of a more permanent, long-lasting solution to dental work tend to be great candidates for dental implants.
A great smile can transform the way you see the world, and yourself. Our experienced team at Armadale Dental Group can replace missing or extremely damaged teeth to restore the appearance, functionality and overall health of your smile. If you're ready to learn more, call us to book an appointment for a consultation today.

Veneers
Veneers can improve the colour, shape and position of your teeth. A precise shade of porcelain can be chosen to give the right colour to improve a single discoloured tooth or to lighten many of your front teeth. A veneer can also make a chipped tooth look whole again.
A veneer is a thin layer of porcelain made to fit over the front surface of a tooth. Sometimes a natural coloured ‘composite' material can be used instead of porcelain as an alternative. The colour of the surrounding teeth is matched on a shade guide to make sure that the veneer will look entirely natural.
Veneers can make teeth look natural and healthy. Because they are very thin and are held in place by a special, strong adhesive, very little preparation of the tooth is needed. If you are interested in cosmetic enhancements to your smile, schedule a time to see one of our experienced dentists and we can go through the best possible options for you.

Teeth Whitening
Teeth whitening can be a very effective way of lightening the natural colour of your teeth without removing any of the tooth’s natural surface.
Professional teeth whitening is the most common safe method to brighten your smile. Our skilled dentists will be able to assess if you are suitable for the treatment, and discuss realistic expectations. The ‘active ingredient' we use can be highly effective and is for dentist use only. Products found online and available through beauty salons should be avoided and are not recommended by the Australian Dental Association (ADA), as they can result in not only poor results but safety concerns for your teeth and gums.
Sometimes teeth become discoloured after having root canal treatment. If so, the canal (which contained the nerve) may be reopened, with a whitening product applied from the inside to effectively whiten the tooth.
For the best results, it is recommended that your teeth be professionally cleaned before any whitening procedure is undertaken. Teeth whitening will only work on natural teeth, it will not bleach crowns or fillings. The procedure is not recommended if you are pregnant or breastfeeding.

Root Canal Treatment
A root canal is a dental procedure intended to remove tooth pain and restore your tooth. The inside of your tooth can become infected with bacteria as a result of an injury to the tooth or from a cavity that is left untreated.
When the inside of your tooth is severely infected or decayed, we do our best to remove any dying or dead tissue and bacteria from the tooth's interior. This helps to remove the pain and also preserve your tooth, preventing it from being removed.
Treatment is usually completed over a period of two to three visits. At Armadale Dental Group, we can help you save your natural tooth and avoid having it removed.
Symptoms of an infected tooth include:
- Inflamed gums
- Tooth soreness when eating and drinking
- Intense tooth sensitivity to hot and cold
- Smelly, bad breath
- Pus coming from around the tooth
- Painful aching in your mouth or jaw
- Darkening color of the tooth
- A small pimple-like bump on your gum
If you experience any of these symptoms, it is recommended you contact us as soon as possible so that we can help you save the tooth and prevent any serious ongoing health issues. Following root canal treatment, you may in time require a crown to be placed on top of the tooth, to ensure strong tooth structure.

White Fillings
A Filling may be required if your tooth’s structure has been lost due to decay or trauma.
Tooth-colored fillings, also called composite fillings, are dental fillings that restore and mimic the natural appearance of tooth structure. In addition to restoring teeth that have fractured or decayed, tooth colored fillings may also be used cosmetically to change the size, color and shape of teeth.
There are many benefits to composite (white) tooth fillings over amalgam (silver) fillings. The result is a repair practically invisible to other people. Composite fillings are also completely safe and non-toxic.

Sleep Dentistry
Armadale Dental Group understands that for some patients, dental visits can be overwhelming and can cause some anxiety. Often this level of anxiety can discourage patients from visiting the dentist and thereby preventing them from obtaining treatment often required to improve their oral health. GA sedation (often referred to as Sleep Dentistry), is a pain-free way for our patients to receive the dental treatment they need.
Children and adults can have most dental procedures performed via sleep dentistry, including fillings, crowns, veneers, multiple extractions, removal of wisdom teeth and also implant placements. A consultation with the anaesthetist is required to ensure patients are medically fit for sedation. The specific costs for sleep dentistry can be provided at the time of consultation. Patients with private health insurance should speak with their health fund regarding any rebates relating to the procedure. Any surgical or invasive procedure carries risks. You should seek a second opinion from an appropriately qualified health practitioner.
For your convenience, treatment is performed right here at Armadale Dental Group and offered by all of our dentists.

Checkups
At Armadale Dental Group, we know that good oral health starts in early childhood. Our kind, compassionate experienced dentists will provide your child with the highest standard of care.
Your child should come and see us by their first birthday or when their teeth start to come through. It is a great way to get your child comfortable with visiting our dental clinic and the routine of visiting the dentist (riding in the big chair!). Although baby teeth are only present during early childhood years, they actually play an extremely important role in the development of your child’s overall oral health and smile for the rest of their life. It's really important to have good oral hygiene habits form early, so your child’s oral health must be assessed and maintained from a very young age.
Some of our dental professionals have children of their own, having that first hand experience in providing a gentle and understanding touch.
Your child may be eligible for the government's Medicare Child Dental Benefits Schedule (CDBS). For more information, click here.

Sealants
Sealants protect the grooves of your teeth that brushing and flossing can’t reach. They are a tooth-coloured plastic film that is professionally applied to the deep grooves (fissures) on the back teeth (molars) where tooth decay most often begins. The bacteria in plaque live in these grooves and make acid which then causes tooth decay.
Dental sealants can assist in preventing the buildup of plaque acids on the enamel surface of teeth, helping prevent tooth decay.
A good time to apply sealants is soon after permanent teeth have erupted (come through). Sealants protect the grooves of your teeth that brushing and flossing can’t reach. Here at Armadale Dental Group, sealants are easy to apply and take only a few minutes to cover each tooth. They are very strong and can last several years before a reapplication is needed.
Children and adults can benefit from sealants in the ongoing fight against tooth decay. Ask us about dental sealants during your next visit with us.
